BECOMING

Low key embarrassing to admit, but until about a year ago I actually thought a caterpillar climbed into a cocoon, stayed basically the same, and just grew wings.

Apparently... that's not how it works at all.

I couldn't believe it when I learned that inside the chrysalis, much of the caterpillar actually breaks down into an almost liquid state before becoming something completely new. I just sat there thinking...

"Wait... what?"

In a way, it's almost like entering a tomb. Before there can be wings, there first has to be a letting go of what once was.

No wonder transformation feels so painful. We don't just wake up one day and magically become new. We slowly surrender old habits, old fears, old ways of thinking, old identities, and sometimes even dreams we thought would always be part of us. Becoming isn't about adding wings to the person we used to be. It's about allowing Christ to create someone new.

Maybe that's where so many of us find ourselves... somewhere between the caterpillar and the butterfly. The messy middle of becoming has a way of making us wonder if anything beautiful could possibly come from it. She isn't flying away from the storm. She's arising through it.

Then we remember that Christ Himself willingly entered a tomb and rose again with healing in His wings. Because of Him, what feels like an ending is often the beginning of new life. The beginning of the wings we never knew we had.

"Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new." — 2 Corinthians 5:17
